The arrival of a dog is an exciting and decisive moment in your life. But how do you decide which dog really suits you? It is not just about being cute or looking good on Instagram – dog choice is a long-term responsibility and it is worth being consciously approached. 1. Lifestyle: urban rush or rural calm?
Every dog requires movement, but not the same degree. If you live in a small apartment, rarely at home, or you live a quiet life, then a calmer, smaller dog (e.g. mopss, French bulldog, bologna) can be a good choice. If you are active, hiking, running, you will be the perfect partner for a more sporty, more mobile kind (e.g. border collie, vizsla, husky).
2. Experience: are you a beginner or an experienced farmer?
Some breeds are easier to handle, learn quickly, while others need more patience and experience. If you have a dog for the first time, find a breed that is famous for coming out with beginners – for example, golden retriever, cavalier spaniel, or mixture of saved dogs, who are well-known by shelter carers, and help you choose what suits you.
3. Family situation: children, other animals, company
There are varieties that are particularly good with children or other pets. When there’s a child in the family, it’s important to have a calm, patient dog. If you already have a cat or other dog at home, it’s worth testing the behavior of the new newcomer with other animals. The choice of dogs here also gives you the opportunity to give a saved, socialized dog a chance.
4. Size and strength: not just look at the appearance
A bernath or German shepherd is beautiful, but also strong and needs a lot of space. Large dogs eat more, they need more space, and they require heavy physical strength on the leash. Small dogs are easier to transport, although they often have more energy than we think!
5. Health and care
Some breeds are prone to certain diseases or require special care (e.g. long hair, skin wrinkles). Think about how much time and money you can spend on regular care, veterinary visits, quality food. A mixed dog can often be more resistant, while pure-bred dogs can be more predictable in character and size.
6. Saved or bred?
The shelters are full of loving puppies – many of them are already housebroken, vaccinated, crispy, and eager to be taken home. The choice of a pure-bred dog from a breeder can also be a good choice if you find a reliable, responsible breeder. Whatever path you choose, the most important thing is not to make a decision on impulse.
